Follow the Bear to the Electronic Recycling Party… People across South Wales are being urged to clear out their unwanted electrical items to gain free entry to the Electronic Recycling Party at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff. The party on Thursday 22 February 2012 is free to anybody who brings along a small item of electronic waste (e-waste) for recycling. Doors open from 8pm until 2 am, with live music from The Invisible and Face + Heel, followed by a DJ set by Raf Daddy of 2 Bears fame. The door policy is strict: no e-waste, no entry! The recycling scheme European Recycling Platform (ERP) has organised the party to raise awareness that unwanted electronics can be recycled for free. Not nearly enough small electronics are recycled in Wales. Most items sit around in people’s homes or are thrown in the bin, but all local authorities will accept e-waste for recycling for free. Find your nearest recycling centre at www.wasteawarenesswales.org.uk or www.erp-ewaste.co.uk. E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world and young people are particularly heavy gadget users. Most of the stuff electronics are made from can be used again. The plastic from a computer keyboard could end up in a new musical instrument, the gold from a mobile phone could be made into jewellery, and an iron contains enough steel to produce 13 steel cans. So the message of this recycling ‘celebration’ is clear: don’t stop the party! Recycling your old gadgets means new ones don't have to cost the earth! Raf Daddy of 2 Bears said: “I’m really happy to be playing this night. Clwb Ifor Bach is a great venue and I think what ERP is doing is fantastic. Getting into a great gig for free, by doing some good for the environment – it doesn’t get much better than that!” Scott Butler, ERP’s managing director, commented: “In late 2010, we held a recycling party in London. Now we’re doing one in Cardiff. We want to take the message of these parties all over the UK so that next time a gadget breaks people know what to do with it: don’t bin it – recycle it! ERP has recycled over three hundred thousand tonnes of e-waste in the UK keeping mountains of valuable material from landfill. We think that in itself is a cause for celebration!”
