Formed from the ashes of Cardiff’s fondly remembered avant-rock trio Mountain Men Anonymous, Cardiff two-piece Zail play gnarled, hard-hitting instrumental rock riffage inspired by – and reminiscent of - haywire bass/drums duo Lightning Bolt, the mathematic clang of Shellac, and the white-hot breakbeats of drum’n’bass. Joining them are Oxford’s Hreda, who play the sort of music that popularly goes under the name of ‘post-rock’ - but if you’re expecting ponderous experiments in sound, think again. Harnessing twin guitars, crashing drums and occasional cello, this is music that broods like black storm clouds and rolls like thunder, as mighty and uncontrollable as Mogwai or Explosions In The Sky in their pomp. “Their shy stage antics expose twee ‘tudes, quaintly rippin’ it up with their backs turned as if tryin’ hard to keep a juicy secret,” write Drowned In Sound.
